We, at Smile Artists Africa care passionately about the work that we do and the impact we want to have in the lives of women, especially those who have bravely survived the trauma of breast cancer.
Many of the survivors experience depression, fear and periods of feeling down even long after the end of their treatments due to, in a large part, the changes that the cancer has caused in their lives, especially physically. The loss of one of both breasts can leave a woman feeling less feminine or even attractive.
We therefore have the audacity to believe that breast reconstructive surgery is one of the ways that we can give these women back their sense of identity and most importantly a new lease on life.
The costs of the surgeries are high. These include the cost for the hospital stay (usually 2 days post-surgery), the surgeon, anesthesiologist, theater time, medication and dressings.
The estimated cost can vary between R75 000- R100 000 per surgery depending on the complexity.
We are fortunate and grateful that Dr Brian Monaisa performs these surgeries and follow up consultations free of charge and that cuts down on the costs.
It is therefore evident that we cannot do this on our own and we need your help!

Smile Artists Africa arose from a desire amongst the artist community to contribute to social development in South Africa. Dr Brian Monaisa is a Johannesburg based plastic surgeon, and an avid art collector. He rallied these incredible independent, artists together into the Smile Artists Africa project. Renowned and rising artists have responded to the call and donated works to be sold in aid of empowering female cancer survivors.
